Picky’s top 10 tips for picking great stock photos.

by Lauren Burton

  1. Start by identifying the need and purpose of the photo. What is the message you want to convey?

  2. Use specific keywords. If you use terms that are too generic you'll be inundated with options. Being specific upfront will save time & ensure you’re presented with a more relevant selection of images.

  3. Consider the craft of the image; the composition, lighting, tone and other visual elements. An aesthetically pleasing and engaging image will help grab the attention of your audience and effectively communicate your message.

  4. Choose photos that are authentic and realistic, rather than staged or overly posed. Avoid photos that are generic or cliche. It's important that your photo feels genuine and relatable. This will also avoid any potential credibility issues.

  5. Steer clear of images that are overly edited or manipulated, as this can reduce their credibility and impact. Instead, look for photos that are natural and accurately capture the scene or environment.

  6. Consider the diversity of the individuals and groups depicted in the photo. It is imperative that you ensure the photo accurately & authentically reflects the diversity of your audience and the broader community.

  7. Check the background of the photo to ensure that it is uncluttered and free of distractions. This can help to ensure that the focus of the photo remains the main subject and leaves natural room for text and logos.

  8. Ensure that the image you’re selecting doesn’t contradict your brand style and visual design. This image is being used to represent your brand and adds to your brand’s collateral. It needs to feel like it's part of the same story.

  9. Ensure that the image you want to use is of sufficient quality for your intended use. A high-resolution is sharp and clear and provides flexibility for scaling and editing for use in different formats.

  10. Check the licenses available for the stock image prior to purchasing. Make sure that the photo is legally protected and that you have the right to use it for your intended purpose. At Picky we have four license types, you can read more about them here.
