YARNS WITH...BOSHI WANG

by Kimberley Torrie

  1. Picky: When did you first pick up a camera? Please tell us your backstory!
I started to take random photos by using my Nokia 5300 when I was 16 years old in high school. Back then, my classmates were my subjects. I did not have any ideas about photography, it was just for fun.

After I came to New Zealand in 2008, I started to learn photography.

  2. How would you describe your photographic genre / style?
I am trying to keep everything simple and minimal in my photos. Alone with a bit of loneliness.

  3. What motivates and inspires you to keep creating?

Firstly I’d say taking photos is something I really really love to do. I just love taking photos and touching the camera.

Also photography is the way that I can share my understanding of my feelings about the world and everything that happens around me.

  4. What sort of imagery would you like to see more of around Aotearoa?
I would love to see more photos of people doing different activities in New Zealand’s iconic places.

  5. Favourite subject to photograph?

Just walking on the street and using my camera to capture what I see when I travel is my favourite thing to photograph. These days I am trying to take more portraits of different people.

Muriwai beach photos are always my favourite, it is my favourite place.

  7. If you could only photograph one person / place / object for the rest of your life, what would it be?

If time can go backwards, I want to go back to my grandma's old house which I grew up in. She is my forever favourite person to photograph. Her old wood wardrobe is my favourite object, because I always jump into the wardrobe and wait for her to find me. The mothball smell is unforgettable.

  8. How do you feel about the current creative climate in NZ?
I always believe New Zealand has one of the best creative industries in the world.

  9. “Picky Pointer” – Is there one tip, trick or life hack which makes your job easier?
The more life experience you get, the more understanding you gain of photography.

  10. What’s next for you?
I want to take more commercial photos!
